Progreso Mexico |
It is the main port of the State of Yucatan and a federal pier. In 1871, this place was declared deep port. Later, in 1876 it became a city, due to the fast growth brought by the "green gold" (henequen) fever. It is also a shelter for fishing fleets and sport boats.
Puerto Progreso in Mayan times used to be Yaxactun (The Great Route or the Great Stone Turtle) in Mayan era. It is located 32 kilometers (19 miles) North of Merida. You should visit San Antonio de Yaxactun Chapter, which dates back to the Nineteenth Century; the San Antonio Temple, from the Seventeenth Century and the San Juan Parish, form 1872. There is an annual celebration for San Pedro Telmo, saint patron of fishermen. Progreso beaches offer fine sand, slopes and waves. There are showers and dressing rooms facilities. The most outstanding beaches are Chelem, Costa Azul, El Malecon, Costa Blanca, Chuburna and Yucaltepec. Due to the nature of this port we do not offer a real estate investment tour. This is a beach day for you to relax and enjoy this port of call on our MCE cruises. |
